Huacachina
We went into town, were we got more money and got on a bus to Ica. The bus was pretty good, got there around 10 or so. Took a taxi to Huacachina, this city right outside of Ica, surrounded by giant sand dunes. We booked a hostel, and also a trip to see a national reserve and some mini Galapagos islands tomorrow. I took a sandboard, and walked up this big ass sand dune. Apparently, I suck at that, since I could never go fast at all. I think it was because my board wasn't waxed. Well, we are going on a dune buggy ride / sand boarding trip in about an hour, so that should give me another chance. After that trip, we are having a barbecue in our little oasis. Actually, when we were booking the dinner, the guy offered us cocaine (i´m pretty sure it was because Mike kept on sniffing, as he was just getting over his sickness). We took him up on that, so we will try that tonight. Just kidding. Seriously though, he did offer us coke. We then went to some museum where we saw a bunch of scarily preserved mummies.
Well, thats about all for now, more later.
After I wrote the last email, we immediately went back to our little oasis to get ready for the dune buggy trip. We got back, changed into some other clothes, and put on some sun tan lotion. We got into the buggy, which holds a driver and like 6 more people (three rows total) and put on our extremely questionable seat belts. We got going, and started up one of the dunes. The sand is flying all around, so it is hard to keep your eyes open, but you get used to it. It is a lot like a roller coaster, with giant hills that you go up and down. Eventually we stop and have our first taste of sand boarding. We wax our boards and then lay down face first onto them, and then just go down the hill. You go quite fast, even on this little hill. It kinda skins up your knees and knuckles, but its worth it. We go a again, this time we try to stand. Its kinda hard, I didn't really get it that time. We then take the buggy some more, the views are awesome with huge sand dunes all around you, its like being in a movie. We eventually get to this big hill, where we are to go down on our stomachs again. This hill is big, and you go VERY fast. Its quite scary. When I made it to the bottom, I apparently failed to keep my mouth shut, because I ended up with a complete mouthful of sand. It was pretty freaking disgusting. I think I finally got all of it out today. However, it was a LOT of fun. Very fast. I try the same hill standing, and this time I partially get it (albeit slowly). The sand is very, very soft (id say softer than most snow). We go for a while longer in the buggy, eventually ending at this HUGE hill. Maybe 6 or 7 hundred feet. I go down standing, and again I go down ok, but slowly. Not enough practice. We eventually end up on this hill overlooking the exact definition of an oasis. It is like out of a movie, its actually pretty hard to believe. First time I've ever seen anything like that. We go back to our hostel, and we have a few drinks and then a barbecue. I meet some Norwegians and a Canadian, we talk about how they all take a year off before university (i feel ripped off). Its always cool to meet people in the middle of a year of traveling the world. I want to pretty bad at this point, and now I've just got to figure out how I´m gonna do it. Well, we go to bed at about 1:30, which sucks, since we have to be up at 5.
