Nicaragua

Nicaragua is a pretty interesting place with a lot of history. I was able to visit it on my trip through Central America, and was able to stop on the Isle of Ometepe, and at the towns of Granada and León.

Ometepe is a dual volcano island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. It is a very relaxed place that is perfect to chill out on. I stayed with a couple of traveller friends in a small hostel there, were we swam, lay ed in hammocks, drank awesome rum, and ate delicious food. We explored a bit of the island, including some ancient carvings and a very cool natural spring, but the theme was decidedly "let's relax". It was pretty fantastic.

After Ometepe, we all headed across to the town of Grenada, which is an old Spanish colonial town with a lot of history and fun places to explore. We stayed a few days here and saw all the sites, and again drank quite a bit of rum.

After that, I split off from the people I had been travelling with and headed up to León. León is actually fairly similar to Grenada, similar sizes and similar setups. Again, I stayed a few days here and explored the city. I also drove out to the ruins of Old León, where the Spanish had initially set up shop. Lots of Spanish history and ruins to explore.

I also had one traumatising half-night in Managua, where I was at to catch a bus up to Guatemala. I ended up being alone, in a very dangerous part of town, at 10pm. And I had to catch a bus out of there at 3am! Luckily, I randomly found the once bar that stayed open late, and had a pretty decent night getting very drunk with a couple of British surfers until 10 minutes before my bus left. And thus ended my experiences in Nicaragua!
